Choosing a Jeweler
Finding a professional you can trust
When you buy a dazzling piece of fine jewelry, you're making an important purchase. Equally important is the decision of where you're going to make the purchase. Before you select a jeweler, be logical, be thorough and don't be afraid to ask questions.
A Lasting Relationship
The right jeweler should be one you can rely on for all your jewelry purchases, year after year. Your jeweler should educate and inform you, guide you in selecting jewelry of lasting quality, and help you properly care for your jewelry. A professional jeweler should be on the same level as your doctor, lawyer or accountant—trusted individuals who have mastered the unique skills required by their professions.
Questions to Ask
Is Your Jeweler a JA Member?
The "J" mark on the door means the jeweler is a member of Jewelers of America, an association that promotes integrity and professionalism. JA members keep pace with industry trends and provide up-to-date merchandise and information.
How Long Has the Jeweler Been in Business?
Ask how long the store has been in business and if they have community involvement. The longer the store has been involved in the community, the more solid its reputation. Ask about staff credentials and training.
What is the Jeweler's Reputation?
Ask friends, neighbors or associates about their experiences. Contact your local Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce to check for any negative reports about the store.
What Services Does the Jeweler Offer?
Does the jeweler clean, size, engrave, restring or remount jewelry? Is there a trained gemologist and bench jeweler on premises? A gemologist can explain gemstones; a bench jeweler can repair and custom design pieces.
Do You Have All Product Information?
According to FTC guidelines, jewelers should give you all information about the product including price, metals, gemstones used, and any enhancements or treatments performed.
What is the Return Policy?
Inquire about the time period for returns and whether you can get an exchange or cash refund.
Does the Jeweler Offer High Discounts?
Be wary of stores that continually discount 50-60%. Find out if the "discounted" jewelry was ever sold at the regular price and for how long. Compare prices from jeweler to jeweler.
Does the Jeweler Offer a Wide Selection?
Selection is important. A professional jeweler can help develop a jewelry wardrobe that meets your budget, tastes and lifestyle, and can special order or custom design pieces.
