    Types of Watches

    Mechanical

Traditional "wind-up" watches. Work because of a mainspring that the wearer winds by turning the crown.

    Automatic/Self-Winding

Wind themselves as the wearer moves their wrist. A weight behind the movement rotates, winding the mainspring.

    Quartz

Powered by batteries. Electronic impulses pass through synthetic quartz crystal vibrating 32,000+ times per second.

    Analog

    Watches with traditional time-telling "hands."

    Digital

Display time with digits using LED or LCD technology.

    Chronograph

Measure small fractions of a second. Some calculate speeds, distances and altitudes.

    Quartz vs. Mechanical

Quartz watches are generally more accurate than mechanical watches for two reasons: mechanical watches have many moving parts creating friction, while quartz crystals vibrate at an incredibly consistent rate. A quartz watch should function properly for years with a battery life of one to five years.

    Caring for Your Watch

    • • Wind mechanical watches clockwise, about the same time each day. Take it off your wrist to avoid pressure on the stem.
    • • Replace broken or scratched crystals immediately—even hairline cracks let dust or moisture in.
    • • Unless water-resistance was specified, don't wear it in the shower or pool.
    • • Don't attempt "do-it-yourself" repairs—only expert watchmakers should service your watch.
    • • Replace quartz batteries before they run out—dead batteries can leak and corrode.
    • • Always have battery replacement done by a trained professional.
